Este ensayo fotográfico está inspirado en la historia del primer encuentro de tres hombres con La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de Cuba, que navegaban en la Bahía de Nipe en 1613, cuando de repente se levantó una tormenta, que sacudía violentamente su embarcación con fuertes olas, y comenzaron a orar por su protección cuando de repente, el cielo se despejó y la tormenta desapareció. “Cachita” simboliza la resiliencia y la fe de los cubanos que le rezan pidiendo esperanza y salvación ante la desgracia y la unión de los que aún viven dentro de la Isla y los que viven en el Exilio.
Curriculum
Born in Havana, Cuba. Portal lives and works in Miami. He has documented extensively South Florida, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, South and Central America on assignments as a staff photojournalist videographer for the Miami Herald/ El Nuevo Herald since 1995.
A fellow at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in 2017, traveling to
Colombia as a part of the Digital Path to Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Latin
America program. He has won several awards from the National Association Hispanic Publications and NAHJ and the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news in 2022 as part of The Miami Herald Staff. He attended Miami Dade College and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
